Icmeler History
Icmeler history stretches as far
back as 3400 B.C. The first settlers to this region were named the Car.
Caria was later assigned, meaning the land of the Car. The abundance and
richness of the coastlines of the Aegean and Mediterranean has
constantly allured the new coming settlers. This settlement was and
still is an important link to the Aegean islands and Rhodes. Thus in the
time being this area was ruled by numerous civilizations the likes of
Carian, Rhodian, Minoan, Egyptian, Assyrian, Ionian, Dorian, Persion,
Macedonian, Syrian, Roman, Byzantian, Seljukian and Ottoman where
conspicuous traces are still found among the lands that surround the
resort. Remnants can be found of the city of Physkos, the first
settlement of Icmeler and Marmaris, near the vicinity of Asartepe.

Because
Icmeler is thought to be established by the west Anatolian civilization "Carians"
we can only examine the history of Icmeler with Marmaris and Mugla. After the
"Carians" in 3400 B.C. it was controlled by many nations.
They included Estians, Jonians, Dors, Lydians, Persians and Alexander The Great. It
was then ruled by the Romans and Byzantines for a long time and administered by officials of
Rhodes. Finally the region fell into the hands of the Turkish between 1280-1290.There are historical artifacts in this region which backup these claims
although no in depth excavation has been conducted. Documents have been found about the area and have taught us that the oldest former names of this region of
Icmeler are Yilaniye and Golenye.
Surrounded by pine laden hills, Icmeler is named after its numerous
fresh water sources featuring renowned healing properties to the
digestive system. Renown for its natural and historical wonders, it is
the place to experience the joys of exploration, shopping, Mediterranean
entertainment and true resort life. It is the place where the sun never
seems to loose its smile and was honored by Heredotus himself as
"possessing the worlds most beautiful sky".
